This was another oak dining table for a Voysey house owner. The use of oak on the top with beautiful grain figuring really dominates the dining room it is in. Voysey did design one or two oval top tables so there was a precedence for this shape. Other Voysey touches include the thumb nose table top edge moulding, so no sharp edges to rub against. The legs also are tapered from square to octagonal, a typical Voysey feature.
The oval table shape was dictated by 2 requirements; the family preferences & the dining room the table was to go in. The dining room had a large Voysey fireplace, with typical semi-circular surround. As the table sat near to the fireplace it made visual sense to have radiused ends. Also, an oval table allows people to move around it easier, and promotes more sociability.
This was probably the most complicated dining table I have ever designed, even though it looks uncomplicated. The table had to be able to cope with normal family usuage, but also had to allow for a large no. of sitters on special occassions.
The top had 1 removable leaf & 1 leaf that could fold under the table. However, the complication arose when the table had both leafs in place, as it meant there was a large overhang of top at either end to support. This is quite a weight of oak to support, never mind people leaning on the tops! The solution was sliding rails fixed to the sides, that would take this weight. To compensate for this extra strain on the frame the legs & the frame had to be beefed up.
Finished with a lacquer finish. You can of course specify the table be left in natural Oak as Voysey might have, but modern life requires many to have the table lacquered, to prevent marking day to day (think coffee rings, red wine glass marks, etc). Your choice. Made to order, so the sizes can be made to whatever you want. Delivery time approx. 12 weeks..
