Further Painted Gothic Examples
This sideboard is a wonderful example of Victorian painted Gothic furniture. There
are influences from Burges to the Audsley Bros. here. It is a textbook
example of Victorian Gothic design, details and colours.
This is the 'daddy' of them all - the piece that probably more than any other
launched Gothic painted furniture back into the world in the late
1850's ). Burges discovered
some wonderful original Gothic painted furniture in the churches of
northern France, and used the ideas to kick start his own designs.
Eastlake
poked fun at his 'doll's house' tricks used on his furniture - but who
has time remembered better ? ( You're right, they're both nearly forgotten !)
This is a recreation of William Burges' own bedroom, recreated in the
Cecil Higgins Art Gallery. It is so so different to our modern view of a
bedroom; even harder to believe then that Burges' own room was even more
ornate than this !.
See the links page for more information on the Gallery.
This is a modern interpretation of the painted Gothic style; the
influence of Burges is obvious. The dramatic shape works even better for the
understated painted finish, picked out with touches of Gold. This style of
cupboard could be adapted for several uses, cupboard, drinks cabinet, for
books, a TV or hi-fi cabinet, etc.
