Another interesting Burges sideboard design. The sideboard idea came from Burges's 'Flax & Wool' wardrobe, which was adapted by removing the top half. This made for an interesting sideboard design, which is quite light in colours & treatment compared to many of his pieces. The 'Flax & Wool' robe was one of Burges's earliest pieces, where he was still trying out new ideas for his furniture. The long strap hinges hadn't appeared on this piece; these hinges are quite modest & don't detract from the overall design. You can see other versions of this in the cabinets section.
The sideboard shows how you can take his designs & ideas & adapt them, something he did himself. The proportions of this could be changed, as shown above, while keeping the same look. As is so often the case with Burges his best work uses very flat surfaces for decoration. It was the decoration that made them. This piece is covered with typical Burges Gothic diaper patterns & 'stone block' lines. As well as using it for a sideboard you could use it for a drinks cabinet, home office cupboard, bookcase, TV or hi-fi cupboard, etc.. Made to order.
