This stunning Gothic chair was designed by Wm Burges for his own home, Tower House, in London. The Mermaid was a favourite motif for Burges, although it was originally on the back of the chair, we put it on the front so you can see the design when sitting against a wall. Burges had the designs on the front as well as the back of the chairs. The Mermaid chair on this page just gives you a flavour of the range of Mermaid style chairs he did, with various designs, never mind the wider range of chairs he designed. Over the years we have collected a lot of information, drawings & designs for these chairs, and could make many variants of them.
The chair is painted a Burgundy red, with gilded and painted bands and mermaid. The Mermaid chair also had an accompanying Merman design. Also, Burges used several other 1/2 human 1/2 animal medieval designs on the backs as well. With a hand-rushed seat. Some of the chairs were later upholstered over the rush seats. Made to order.
We couldn't resist this lovely Mermaid table, although more contemporary in look with the glass top, it sits happily with the chair. The table base has the same sensual look and feel as the chair design, and recalls the 'Mermaid' chimney piece he designed. Height 56cm with a 6mm Toughened glass top ( complies with BS2606A ). Available in natural ( as shown ), bronze or gold finish to match the chair design ( made from resin ). Ref T6. To order only.
Shown above are another couple of original Wm Burges chairs. These are closely related to the Mermaid chair above. There overall look does not match the style of the chair above, they look more basic, possibly because they were finished near or after Burges's death.
The chair on the left was painted in a dark green, similar to much of the furniture associated with Castell Coch. It had gilded bands/panels with further decorative painting on top. The chairs on the right were left in a wood finish with bands of dark brown edged with red.
