This is an actual Burges design, the bottom part of a bureau called the 'Fry' cabinet. This original piece was one of the first 3 pieces of painted Gothic furniture by Burges. It shares many of the same decorative ideas of the other 2 pieces; the door frames have similar designs to the 'Yatman' cabinet while the doors panels are similar to the 'Flax & Wool' wardrobe. While the typical Burges decorative treatment of flat surfaces is apparent the long strap hinges had not appeared yet.
Shown above is a taller version with a top draw with elaborate decoration. Below are shown 2 smaller versions minus the drawer; one has a small back upstand. The top can be supplied in stone, marble, mosiac, painted, wood, etc. We could make this to order, and adapt the sizes, proportions or colours to suit. It is shown with a small upstand. We can also make a matching wall mirror to go above this. This design could equally be adapted for a chest of drawers.
