Art Deco; kitchens (1)
These particular clients wanted a WOW Deco kitchen. They liked the 'sunburst' or 'rising sun' motif (often seen in red &
yellow, as the photographs below), & wanted to incorporate it into the kitchen. However, the effect has that Wow factor,
even if a bit too bright for some. There are 3 design elements at play in the design; angled walls/units; rounded 'Cloud'
shapes in the units & breakfast bar & the stepped look of Skyscraper style. 2 pairs of French doors ensured a nice bright
room with good views from the breakfast bar.
We produced some initial sketches and narrowed the look down to the one above. The main kitchen units were to have a
stepped look, with a red & yellow splashback rising sun 'rays' produced in Corian. Even the cooking area worktop
height was to be lowered (a) to emphasis the stepped look (b) because it's actually quite practical to have lower
cooking heights (especially if you are not tall). The cooking area was also pulled forward with curved units either
side. A dramatic sweeping curved breakfast bar completed the look. The oven & microwave were built into mid height
units on the back wall, which saves bending down to access them. The sink is nice & close to the hob, & still allows
views out of the French doors. The extractor is a concealed model for a clean look.

You can really have some fun & give this style of kitchen a visual punch with the introduction of graphic images for the splashbacks,
be they printed or painted images. So long as they are covered with glass they offer the same protection behind the
hob. These are the kind of ideas that really distinguish bespoke designed kitchens from the norm. Some of the designs show
one of our stepped Skyscraper style mouldings used over the central wall units. Shown below are some colour design variations, for ideas.

The Rising Sun motif could be echoed with the use of a new stained glass window, where it would have been more subtle. Or even
more effective & dramatic in new doors as shown here. These doors alone would give a room the Art Deco look, even with a neutral
kitchen.
