We put together some of our existing pieces to design a new Morris style bathroom. This photo & those below will give you some more ideas for producing a new bathroom in the Morris style.
The washstand (older name for the vanity unit) is painted a deep Morris green, as part of the original Morris 'Artisan' suite - see furniture section. When this was first made, c. 1861, a washstand was all anyone had for washing themselves, even the wealthy. No baths were seen in houses for several decades afterwards. The washstand gives more of an un-fitted, freestanding furniture look to the bathroom. The original washstand had an inset basin, which you could still have. We've shown the washstand with 3 different types of round sit-on basins for ideas. The worktop is wooden & painted, as the original; but it could be made from marble or granite, Corian, glass, etc. It is made to order, and therefore you can specify the size & finish(es) you want.
Shown above the vanity unit is a large matching mirror frame. This is painted with the 'Vine' border from the Kelmscott Chaucer, in matching colours to the vanity unit. This same design mirror frame could also be supplied as a 2 door wall mirror unit, with the same frame design, giving you storage & the practicality of a large mirror. The nice thing about large mirrors is they bounce light around the bathroom & make it feel visually bigger.
To complete the bathroom look we've shown matching bath panels. These are painted the same deep green as the Vanity & Mirror. The 2 photos above show bath panels with Morris's Willow Bough design. Or we could use Morris Tiles for the panels. The washstand above right has co-ordinated the washstand & bath panels. An oak floor would be very Morris & show off the colour designs really well, but a tiled floor may be more practical. Add in a few extra touches such as painted WC seat, some Morris style tiles, Willow Bough curtains / blinds & you have a great looking Morris style bathroom. These are the elements that make it a Morris style bathroom; not the taps, WC, shower, etc.
The above photos show different effects that can be achieved with the washstand & basins.
Above are shown some alternate colour versions of the vanity unit & wall mirror. They can be made in a natural wood finish or many painted finishes, from off white to dark base colour. A double width vanity unit was also designed at the time, shown above in the bottom 2 designs, which could also be used in your bathroom. This gives you the flexibility to match fabric or wallpaper or tiles for a really co-ordinated look.
