Mackintosh's last real commission in 1916 was Derngate, a re-model of a Georgian town house in the center of Northampton. Some of the finished interiors were stunning, and even today 100 years later look strikingly modern. He had lost none of his creativity, and with these interiors he pre-empted the coming Art Deco style by several years. Being both a tribute to & inspired by Mackintoshs' designs at Derngate, we have produced some new wardrobe designs. These draw on the furniture, colouring & patterns used in various rooms in Derngate. These would be dramatic when used in a bedroom. This is about adding Mackintosh style to enjoy every day.
We did some designs based on Derngate interiors some time ago (see seperate web page for these designs), and having looked at them again recently with fresh eyes we designed some more new pieces based on the original ideas. These new pieces are even more interesting, and were used to produce a whole range of pieces from wardrobes to bookcases, tables, etc as shown below. We even designed a closet style wardrobe, to show the flexibility with these designs.
The idea for the furniture evolved from the living room in Derngate, with it's black painted walls & furniture. But it was the wall patterns that formed the basis for the decoration of these wardrobes. The Cubist style patterns are done in colours that form a striking contrast to the black furniture. The Cubist patterns could also be added to the side of the wardrobes as well, if you want, but we feel this might be too much. The wardrobes are quite a straight forward in design, it is the designs that make them & are labour intensive to do correctly. Needless to say this makes the robes expensive.
The robes can be supplied in many sizes, from 2 doors upwards to corner robes (shown below). The doors are kept narrower to keep the original proportions of the designs. The furniture would be finished in black, with the striking designs on the outside of the doors only. The interiors could be fitted as you want. Made to order. This furniture is all bespoke made, we don't discuss prices or sizes until we've agreed a spec. with a customer.
