Mackintosh designed this washstand (shown below) for the Blue bedroom in Hous'hill, for Kate Cranston, one of Mackintosh's best patrons. With its wonderful shape and abstract panel of glass & tile, the washstand shows Mack at the height of his creative powers. This started out as doing a CAD drawing prior to making a reproduction of this original washstand in oak. But once that was done it just kept progressing into designing variations and new uses, much as Mack himself did with his own work. The overall shape is quite straight forward, but the sloped sides give it a striking profile. Another wonderful touch is the cantilevered drawer's section, with the recessed handles picked out in colour. But it has a very modern look about while still clearly Mack styled and traditional.
Although the piece was designed as a washstand it lends itself very well to use as a console hall table, bookcase, sideboard or desk / bureau. We then did something radical and removed the top half of the washstand / bookcase to produce a vusually smaller piece of furniture that could serve several uses. The open section beneath the drawers can just have shelves for a more open look or we can add doors for a cleaner look and neater storage. The cantilevered drawers section allow this piece to be used as a desk. You could have a matching wall mirror above. There are various options you could have for the worktop, and these will depend on your preference, budget and the look you want to acheive, ranging from tiled as the original, or marble, granite, Quartz stone, slate, Corian, wood, rather than tiled. This cabinet can be finished as the original one, or we could finish it in a range of typical Mack colours/finishes as shown below. We've shown recessed handles which most Mack enthusiasts would prefer, but there is no reason we can't use other handles if you prefer. We don't discuss sizes or pricing until we've agreed a spec. with a customer.

Mackintosh furniture came in many different finishes, depending on the effect he wanted in a given interior or depending on the customer's preference. Above we've shown several 'typical' Mackintosh finishes you could have, from oak in various finishes, to painted & lacquered finishes. Please note we do not supply the Mackintosh chairs (they are just not economical to do as one offs). The above designs show some changes you could make to the original design, such as adding more shelves, or enclosing the open areas with doors, which works surprisingly well.
